Factual: What are the fundamentals of music theory? Debatable: Must one know the rules of music theory to compose music? Conceptual: How are different qualities of triads used in composition?
Summative 1, A.ii Investigation (Individual) Students will choose a piece of Western Art Music and describe (analyze) it for its “7 Elements of Music”, as they pertain to the Genre, i.e. Romantic Era, Classical Era, etc. . This will be a presentation to the class. Summative 2, B.ii Developing (Individual) Students will explore the seven elements of music and trial ways to make them into a composition. They will then focus on creating a composition based on the written Artistic Intention they create for their composition in Summative 3. Summative 3, C.i Creating (individual) Students will create a 2.5-minute-long composition based on Western Art Music creating conventions of their genre they have chosen. Summative 4, D.i Evaluating (Individual) Students will appraise their own artwork in relation to a student-created rubric.

Summative 1, A.i (Individual) Students will research a genre of music that is commonly thought of a “Band”, i.e. Boy Bands, Girl Bands, Hair Bands, Rock Bands, etc…discussing examples of the music and delving into one band and its discography. Summative 2, B.i (Group) Students will practically explore ideas to create and perform music in a genre of their choice. They will be in groups of 4, i.e. singer, drummer, keys, and guitar. Students will write their own lyrics and music. Summative 3, C.1 Performing (Group) Students will perform their original song Summative 4, D.ii Evaluating (Individual) Students will reflect on how this unit make them a better musician.

TOK - How does knowing more about the social, cultural or historical context of a work of art have an impact on our knowledge of the work itself?
Summative 1, Ai & Aii (Investigating) Summative 1 - Criteria Ai - (Investigation)Students will research on their own culture and another culture of their choice from India or around the world. This research needs to be supported by interviews from family members and any known musicians from the region (optional). Criteria Aii - Evaluating a short piece from the culture. (Musical styles, characteristics, elements of music) Summative 2, Bi & Bii Bi - Practically explore ideas - Show exploration of 3 ideas from 3 different cultures (improv, rhythm, melody, scales..etc) Bii - Select one - write an artistic intention. Students will then create an artistic intention that presents how they will preform the selection on their own instrument or voice and what they indeed tto achieve through this performance. Summative 3, C.i Performing Students will create and/or perform a piece paying close attention to the performing practices of that genre. However, this can be on their own instrument or voice – making this an adaptative performance, i.e. if the student chose a vocal piece but plays guitar, they can adapt the vocal piece and play it on their guitar. Create and Perform Summative 4, D.i & D.ii Evaluating Students will complete a critique of their own work, as well as reflecting on how their adaptative performance helped them grow as a musician.
